A beginner driving lesson with ACT Capital Driving School starts in a quiet residential street, not in traffic. Your instructor drives to the starting point, and the first lesson covers the seat and mirror setup, what the pedals do, moving off and stopping, and steering at low speed. The car is an automatic with dual controls, so the instructor can brake from the passenger seat, which means nothing you do in the first hour can go badly wrong. Most complete beginners are driving unassisted on quiet streets by the end of their first hour behind the wheel, and are ready for light traffic within three or four lessons. Your first 10 hours with an accredited instructor also count as 30 hours in your ACT logbook.

Who books these lessons
You have never driven at all
No supervised practice, no car in the family, possibly no idea which pedal is which. This is the most common starting point and it needs no apology.
You have a learner licence and nobody to practise with
Common for students who moved to Canberra for university, and for anyone whose household has one car that somebody else needs.
You are anxious about driving
Anxiety about traffic, about being watched, or about a previous bad experience in a car. Lessons start slower and stay in quiet streets for as long as that takes.
A parent tried to teach you and it went badly
Also extremely common. A dual-control car and somebody with no emotional stake in the outcome changes the dynamic more than people expect.
When this is the wrong booking
If you already drive confidently and only need polish before an assessment, book test preparation instead: you would spend the first hour of a beginner lesson proving you do not need it. If you hold a full licence and have simply not driven for years, refresher lessons are the closer fit.
How it works
Lesson one: the car, stationary
Seat position, mirrors, steering grip, what each pedal does and how little pressure they need. Then moving off and stopping repeatedly in a quiet street until it stops feeling like an event. Most people are surprised how much of the first hour is spent not moving.
Lessons two and three: steering and judgement
Turns at intersections, staying in lane, and getting used to where the car actually is on the road, which almost everybody misjudges at first. Reversing and low-speed control start here.
Lessons four to six: real roads
Light traffic, 60 km/h roads, and your first roundabouts. Canberra runs on roundabouts, so they arrive earlier here than they would in most cities, and they are worth meeting with an instructor rather than with a parent.
From there: building the logbook
Arterials, multi-lane roundabouts, merging, night driving and parking. Lessons alternate with supervised practice, and progress against the 23 ACT competencies is tracked as you go.
The single most useful thing to know about a first lesson is that the instructor drives to the start of it. Nobody is asked to pull out of their own driveway into traffic on their first day. Pickup is free and door to door, so the lesson begins somewhere quiet and chosen for the purpose, usually a residential grid in Chisholm, Calwell, Farrer or wherever is nearest and quietest to you.
The second is the ACT logbook bonus, which changes how you should sequence lessons. Your first 10 hours with an accredited driving instructor are credited as 30 hours in your logbook, a gain of 20 hours. For a learner under 25 who needs 100 hours, that is a fifth of the total requirement cleared by the first ten lessons. It is also why booking professional lessons early rather than saving them for the end is better value, even though most families do the opposite.
Lessons are one-on-one with the same instructor each time. That matters more for a beginner than for anyone else, because the second lesson starts where the first one finished rather than with a stranger reassessing you from scratch.

Questions about beginner lessons
What happens in a first driving lesson?
Your instructor picks you up and drives to a quiet residential street. You then set up the seat and mirrors, learn what the pedals do, and practise moving off and stopping until it feels ordinary, followed by low-speed steering and turns. The car is a dual-control automatic, so the instructor can brake and steer from the passenger seat throughout. Most complete beginners finish the first lesson driving unassisted in a quiet street.
Do I need a learner licence before my first driving lesson?
Yes. You must hold a current learner licence to drive on any road, including with an instructor. In the ACT, if you do not have one yet, the steps are the Pre-Learner Licence Course, the road rules knowledge test, and then a visit to Access Canberra from 15 years and 9 months of age.
Is it normal to be nervous about a first driving lesson?
It is close to universal, and it is one of the most common things people mention when they book. Nerves are handled by controlling the environment rather than by encouragement: a quiet street, no traffic behind you, a car the instructor can stop, and no time pressure to progress faster than you are ready to.
How many beginner lessons will I need?
Most complete beginners are comfortable in light traffic after three or four lessons and are working on arterials and roundabouts by lesson six. Reaching assessment standard usually takes 10 to 15 lessons in total, alongside supervised practice with a parent or friend, though this varies more for beginners than for any other group.
How old do I have to be to start driving lessons in the ACT?
You can hold an ACT learner licence from 15 years and 9 months of age, and lessons can start as soon as you have it. You can complete the Pre-Learner Licence Course and the road rules knowledge test before that birthday, and both results remain valid for two years.
