What the Gungahlin district asks of a learner

Gungahlin is the newest part of Canberra and it drives differently from the rest of the city. The street layouts are recent, the suburbs are still filling in, and the district has one feature no other Canberra district has: light rail running down the middle of Flemington Road, with the turning restrictions and crossing rules that come with it.

For a learner that is worth taking seriously. Sharing a corridor with light rail is not difficult once it has been explained and practised, but it is unfamiliar, and unfamiliar is what causes hesitation in an assessment. We cover it directly rather than routing around it.

Beyond the tram corridor, Gungahlin gives you wide modern arterials, a compact town centre, and quiet new-estate streets in Taylor, Jacka and Throsby that are close to ideal for a first lesson. Every lesson is one-on-one in a dual-control automatic.

We are based in Chisholm in the south of Canberra, and pickup across Gungahlin is free with every lesson. The Gungahlin Drive and Majura Parkway runs make the trip straightforward, and booking a longer lesson gets more driving out of the time.

Where lessons happen

The roads you will actually drive

Route knowledge is the difference between a lesson and a drive around. These are the Gungahlin roads lessons are built on, and why each one earns its place.

01

Flemington Road and the light rail corridor

Canberra's only light rail corridor, with signalised crossings, restricted turns and trams sharing the road space. We work through the rules and then practise them until the corridor feels ordinary.

02

Gundaroo Drive and Horse Park Drive

Long, wide arterials with roundabouts at speed and steady traffic. This is where Gungahlin learners build confidence at 80 km/h and learn to judge roundabout entry without stopping unnecessarily.

03

Gungahlin town centre and the marketplace

Compact, busy and full of pedestrians, buses and car park entries. Tight low-speed control, reverse parking between real cars, and patience in traffic all get practised in one place.

04

Mitchell and the Barton Highway approach

Industrial streets with trucks and unusual sight lines, then higher-speed highway driving with merges and lane changes. Useful preparation for anyone who will drive out of Canberra regularly.

Gungahlin suburbs we pick up from

Lead Instructor

Jeevan Pandey

The same instructor, every lesson

No rotating instructors, no starting over

You are taught by the same licensed ACT instructor from your first lesson to your assessment, so nobody has to be brought up to speed on what you can already do. Lessons are competency-based, which means you are told plainly where you stand after each one rather than being sold another block of hours.

Your first 10 hours with an ACT accredited instructor count as 30 hours in your logbook. See how the ACT licensing steps work.

Driving lessons in Gungahlin: common questions

How do I handle the light rail on Flemington Road?

Carefully and, after a couple of goes, without thinking about it. The two things that catch learners out are turns that are restricted where the tram crosses, and treating a tram signal like an ordinary traffic light. We cover both on the road rather than in conversation, because the corridor only stops feeling unusual once you have driven it a few times.

Do you pick up from the newer Gungahlin suburbs?

Yes. Free pickup covers the whole district, including the newest estates in Taylor, Jacka, Throsby, Moncrieff and Bonner. Those quiet new streets are also some of the best first-lesson ground in Canberra, so if you live there you are starting with an advantage.

How much do driving lessons cost in Gungahlin?

Lessons in Gungahlin are $100 per hour, with free door-to-door pickup and drop-off included. There are no fuel or travel surcharges on top. Multi-hour packages work out cheaper per lesson and are listed on the packages page.

Are lessons automatic or manual?

All lessons are taught in a modern dual-control automatic vehicle. Automatic lets you concentrate on road position, observation and hazard perception from your first lesson instead of splitting your attention with a clutch.

Can you prepare me for the ACT driving assessment in Gungahlin?

Yes. We run competency-based training and assessment, the ACT logbook method, as well as focused preparation for a government driving assessment. Lessons cover the manoeuvres assessors mark and the road types used around Gungahlin, and you will be told honestly whether you are ready before you book an assessment.

I have never driven before. Where do we start?

Somewhere quiet. Your first lesson covers cockpit drill, the controls and slow-speed steering in a calm residential street, and we only move to busier Gungahlin roads once that feels comfortable. There is no fixed schedule you have to keep up with.
