ACT Capital Driving School is based in Chisholm, on Lort Place. That is not a marketing detail, it is the reason lessons here work slightly differently: there is no travel time to absorb before your hour starts, and a morning slot in Chisholm can be booked at short notice in a way that a morning slot in Gungahlin cannot.
It also means the first-lesson ground is ground the instructor drives daily. The residential loops off Halford Crescent and around Chisholm village are about as forgiving as Canberra gets for somebody who has never touched a steering wheel: wide, quiet, gently curved, and almost never queued. Beginners who live in Chisholm, Gilmore or Macarthur often start their first lesson within a few hundred metres of their own front door.
From there the progression is quick, because everything a learner needs is close. Isabella Drive is two minutes away for real traffic, Erindale gives you a shopping-centre car park and a school zone in the same block, and the Monaro Highway is close enough to fit high-speed work into an ordinary lesson rather than a special one.

Where genuine first lessons happen. Wide, quiet, lightly parked streets with gentle curves and very little through traffic, which is exactly what somebody learning where the car actually sits on the road needs and almost nowhere central in Canberra offers.
The step up: multi-lane roundabouts, shopping-centre turn-offs, buses and steady cross-traffic, two minutes from the quiet streets. Erindale also puts a school zone, a car park and a set of pedestrian crossings within one block, so a single lesson can cover several different demands.
40 km/h zones that switch with the clock, children crossing, and parents doing three-point turns in the middle of the road. Timed speed zones and unpredictable pedestrians are both assessed, and both are best learned somewhere you will drive anyway.
Highway on-ramps, merging at 100 km/h, exit planning and lane changes at speed. Close enough to Chisholm that it fits inside a normal lesson, which is why learners based here tend to be comfortable at highway speed earlier than learners from elsewhere in Canberra.
